When we welcome our students back to school this month, many things in Mapleton will look different. Perhaps more importantly, however, are the many things that remain the same, including our responsive community’s dedication to removing obstacles to learning so all Mapleton students can achieve their dreams.
The Mapleton Education Foundation’s annual Wolverine Welcome Back school supply drive is one of the traditions we have had to modify as we continue to navigate these uncharted waters. As a district, 60 percent of students live at or below the poverty level – that’s 5,400 students. We anticipate that number to increase due to economic hardships related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
To help alleviate barriers to getting students back to school, Mapleton is not asking families to bring in school supplies this year. For struggling families, starting off the year without the worry of having to come up with school supplies is a tremendous relief. Instead, the district is hoping to bring school supplies directly into classrooms to ensure all students have what they need to be successful in school, and to help keep students healthy by minimizing the sharing of the materials.
The Mapleton Education Foundation is asking for financial contributions which would allow the district to order school supplies in bulk and deliver the supplies directly to our schools. Rather than collecting individual in-kind contributions of material, this approach reduces the risk of exposure and transmission by volunteers. One hundred percent of your donation will go directly to purchase supplies. Supplies include, but are not limited to notebooks, scissors, pocket folders, pencils, pens, dry erase pens, highlighters, markers, crayons, colored pencils and backpacks. Each cohort of students will require approximately $1,000 in supplies to get them through the entire academic year.
